- When did you start practicing Pilates and why?
Cath: I had my first Pilates experience with Craig Phillips from Dance Medicine Australia in 1988. I had stress fractures in my feet and still can remember that ahh feeling doing leg and footwork on the reformer. I was 16 years old. So, so long ago.
Grant: Cath introduced me to Pilates in 1998. I had a hip Labrum tear from a bike accident. I am sure I was one of her most challenging students.
- How long have you been running a Pilates studio for?
Body centre Pilates opened in 2003, 21 years ago!
- Why did you choose to open your own Pilates studio?
We like Pilates! It always keeps giving. We wanted to create an environment that was enjoyable and restorative to work in. We started with the attitude, “let’s give it 12 months…”
- What have you enjoyed the most about running a studio?
The ability to tailor the work-family life balance when raising three young children. Helping people is also at the top of the list, too. There is always a challenge or problem to solve. Owning and running a studio is never boring.
- What have you found most challenging?
Bringing together a group of people who work well together is challenging, but when done well, it is also the most rewarding. Community is everything.
- How long have you been affiliated with NPT?
Cath: Katrina Edwards was one of my first Pilates teachers, in 1989. I was so shy. I am sure I never spoke. She was bubbly and full of enthusiasm. I have always admired her unwavering determination, exceptional drive, and remarkable skill in bringing out the best in those around her.
- How has this relationship helped you grow your business?
We have enjoyed working alongside NPT diploma graduates for many years. Great training organisations are vital for small businesses. Supporting and working together as a community is so important to ensure small studios continue to thrive.
