The qualification

The Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (10537NAT) is regarded as the entry
level qualification to gain employment in the Pilates industry. The Diploma is designed to reflect the role of an instructor who can work autonomously within the defined range, under limited supervision.

Graduates of this course will be able to take up employment as a Pilates instructor, teaching comprehensive Pilates studio work on all apparatus to a variety of clients in health centres, fitness centres, community centres, clinical practices, or in their own studio.

What will you learn?

The Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (10537NAT) course will prepare you to operate in a professional and specialised studio environment with low-risk client groups. The course is divided into 19 units covering all aspects of the Pilates Method, including:

  • History, concepts and principles of the Pilates Method
  • Exercise planning and programming
  • Postural analysis and appraisal
  • Applied correction of faulty posture and postural dysfunction
  • Client management, assessment and instructing techniques
  • Work Health and Safety and legal requirements within the Pilates industry
  • Methods of communication in dealing with clients and colleagues
  • Adult learning and instructional techniques for one-on-one and groups
  • Interactions and referrals with other health care professionals
  • Systematic approaches to Pilates studio and matwork programming
  • Pilates exercise for special conditions
  • Work ethics and professional development
  • Pilates repertoire for mat, reformer, cadillac, wunda chair, barrels and small apparatus from introductory to intermediate levels.

Course Delivery

The Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (10537NAT) is delivered either online-only or face-to-face.

Face to face delivery

Students undertaking the face-to-face delivery of this course will get access to all learning materials for the nineteen units of competency that comprise the Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (10537NAT).

Students are required to undertake:

  • 408 hours of directed distance learning
  • 300 hours of Self-Directed Learning (SDL)

Students are also required to attend: 

  • 4 x full-day contact days
  • 10 x 5 hour practicums
  • 2 x full-day workshops

Students completing face-to-face studies must also undertake 350 hours of either simulated or real work experience, comprising:

  • 150 hours observation
  • 200 hours teacher training

Online training delivery

Students undertaking the online delivery of this course will get access to all learning materials for the nineteen units of competency that comprise the Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (10537NAT). 

Students are required to undertake:

  • 408 hours of directed distance learning
  • 300 hours of Self-Directed Learning (SDL)

Students can choose to attend contact days, assessment days, practicum days and workshops at an additional cost.

Students completing online only studies must also undertake 350 hours of either simulated or real work experience, comprising:

  • 150 hours observation
  • 200 hours teacher training

Work experience

The work experience component is an essential phase of your training. Being able to put all of your knowledge into practice before you leave the course ensure that you are confident and ready to take on work as an instructor in a professional studio environment.

The work experience hours for this course are part of the delivery schedule and completed through “on-the-job” assisting hours and real time hours at one of our affiliate studios.

Note that you are still under the supervision of a qualified and experienced practitioner during your work experience.

Direct Credit (DC), Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Current Competency (RCC)

Recognition will be given for skills and knowledge gained in other courses, life experience, or training. DC, RPL and RCC assessment may include a variety of methods such as portfolio, practical test, demonstration, interview or a combination of these methods.

The competencies in this qualification may be attained in several ways:

  • Formal or informal training and education, including training at work/in-house staff training
  • Work experience
  • General life experience and/or
  • Any combination of the above
